Nicko Sensoli, a 19-year-old who plays semi-professionally in the fourth tier of Italian football, scored the winner in the Nations League
San Marino finally won their first game in 20 years after beating Liechtenstein 1-0 in their Uefa Nations League opener.
Ranked 210th in the world, the bottom of Fifa’s rankings, San Marino had won just the one game in their entire 34-year history over the same opposition in a friendly match in 2004.
But they ended a run of 140 games without a win after Nicko Sensoli’s 51st-minute strike.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who plays semi-professionally in the fourth tier of Italian football, was mobbed by his team-mates in celebrations and after surviving the rest of the second half and an extra eight added minutes.
The land-locked country within Italy were able to share in their celebrations at the full-time whistle.

San Marino, which is just 23.6sq miles and has just a population of 33,000, have been on the receiving end of heavy defeats since playing their first official match in 1990 and had only not experienced defeat on 13 occasions before last night’s victory.
They famously lost 13-0 to Germany in 2006 and 10-0 to England in 2021 which saw Harry Kane score four times.
Scotland’s first encounter with top-tier Nations League football ended in despair as Nicola Zalewski’s penalty in added time handed Poland an undeserved 3-2 win at Hampden Park.
Sebastian Szymanski’s long-distance strike gave Michal Probierz’s visitors the lead after only eight minutes of the League A group one opener.
Scott McTominay thought he had levelled in the 23rd minute but referee Glenn Nyberg chalked it off for handball and there was more dismay for the Tartan Army when Poland’s superstar striker Robert Lewandowski netted a penalty to make it 2-0 before the break for his 84th international goal.
However, in a second-half turnaround, Billy Gilmour reduced the deficit after a minute and McTominay grabbed a well-deserved equaliser in the 77th minute.
The home side finished the match strongly but in the sixth minute of eight added on, Grant Hanley fouled Zalewski inside the box and the Pole got up to fire in the winner.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 900th goal in Portugal’s 2-1 Uefa Nations League victory over Croatia.
The 39-year-old looked emotional after reaching the milestone in the 34th minute of the clash in Lisbon, converting Nuno Mendes’ cross.
The strike, Ronaldo’s first since June, extended his record haul of international goals to 131.
I dreamed of this, and I have more dreams. Thank you all! pic.twitter.com/2SS3ZoG2Gl
That put Portugal two up following Diogo Dalot’s opener, but the Manchester United defender scored an own goal before half-time to make it a nervy second half.
Meanwhile, early strikes from Paddy McNair and Daniel Ballard earned Northern Ireland a 2-0 victory over Luxembourg as they got their latest Nations League campaign off to a winning start.
With both goals coming in the opening 17 minutes, the only disappointment was that Michael O’Neill’s side did not add to their tally as they dominated their first match at Windsor Park in 10 months.
It was only a second win in 17 tries for Northern Ireland in the short history of this competition, but builds on the momentum of recent improved performances as they look to get themselves out of League C.
